Overview
Cameroon holds the most developed financial sector within the CEMAC region, with its banking system hosting the majority of the region’s accounts. The country’s financial services landscape has been shaped by mobile money platforms such as MTN MoMo and Orange Money, which dominate the digital payments market. These platforms have significantly enhanced financial access, especially in rural areas, and offer a solid foundation for future open banking initiatives.
While open banking frameworks have not yet been established, Cameroon’s robust telecom infrastructure and adoption of mobile money services make it well-positioned for eventual adoption. The Bank of Central African States (BEAC) continues to prioritize digital financial inclusion, focusing on interoperability and regional stability, which could benefit Cameroon’s growing fintech ecosystem.
Looking Ahead
For Cameroon to embrace open banking fully, efforts must focus on regulatory clarity, cybersecurity frameworks, and infrastructure development. As a leader within CEMAC, Cameroon’s progress will likely influence other member states in adopting innovative financial solutions.
Open Banking Nigeria (Open Technology Foundation) is a non-profit backed by a group of industry experts across banking, fintech, risk management, and more to drive and launch the open banking standard in Nigeria.
